Like anything, prevention is better than treatment.
Here are some tips from Bixby Plaza Carpets and Flooring on how to protect your carpet and avoid problems with the installation, residents of Orange County.
- Do some research...even before you start shopping. Explore your lifestyle and budget. In what room do you plan to install.
Be sure it’s the right carpet for the particular installation in the first place, because not all rugs are the same. What may be good for one area may not be for another.
Know the difference between high pile, like shags or frieze which are perfect for bedrooms or living rooms, but not-so-good for stairs. Low pile rugs, such as Berbers, are stylish enough for living rooms but are especially appropriate for home offices where there can be chairs with wheels and often heavy furniture to be moved.
Make sure you’re aware of the different fibers, as well, since they affect durability and stain resistance.
- Vacuum several times a week. You want to remove as much surface dirt as possible because especially in a place like the OC, which is so outdoorsy, dirt and sand can be tracked in one the soles of shoes.
Sand acts like little razor blades and they can shred carpet fibers. Plus, the installation will be dull and matted. Please note, however, that vacuuming alone won’t do it, so have the carpet professionally deep-cleaned every 12 to 18 months; in fact, most manufacturers include a clause stating as such in their warranties.
- Place mats near entrances. This is more than just flooring; it’s an investment. Make sure people wipe their feet or, if possible, even remove their shoes. It’s all too easy to come in from an Orange County beach to drag in moisture and dirt.
- Don’t skimp on padding. That sets the foundation for the installation and it should be ⅜-inch to ½-inch thick. The wrong padding can cut the life of your soft surface in half.
